Sen Vitter Seems Confused

Today Sen Vitter (LA-R) spent some time yanking at Hillary Clinton about her husband's foundation and the donations it takes. I'm sure it is imporant to remember that her husband is former President Bill Clinton who is pretty far up the Republican hate list. There is that issue about a blowjob and not exactly telling the truth about it, so it is clear that Bill needs some really special oversight. The implication is pretty clear, Hillary would prostitute the State Department and the US government for foundation money.

You have to give Vitter credit for doing his homework. He is pretty well acquainted with prostitutes, the DC kind and the NOLA kind, who aren't lobbyists or other Republicans but actual professionals - of the sexual kind. The Hillary connection is a bit more familial than that, his wife 'famously' said that rather than do as Hillary she'd go 'Bobbit' if it were true he'd been doing such extra-curricular homework. It was true and apparently Sen Vitter doesn't have to squat to pee.

Is it just me, or is there something really odd in his playing GOP front man on this? I know it's the Republicans and all, but you'd kind of think...

ah well

No, it's not just you. It's symptomatic of how ethically and intellectually corrupted the GOP has become.

Remember back in the good old days when Pat Buchanan seemed like the posterboy for GOP nuttiness? Now days he seems more like a wisened old sage compared to the likes of Vitter.

On the other hand, from what I heard from Richard Lugar, he was very professional and polite, though necessarily direct, about topics that actually mattered. Sharp guy and not, apparently, an idiot or fear-monger. We could use more opposition like him to keep us all honest. He also seems to be someone we can work with who has the good of the country in mind. Would that they all did.

I sure don't mind an opposition party, I'd just rather it wasn't looniness or opposition for the sake of opposing.

Not stupid. She is going to get confirmed, so why throw someone at her that matters. Makes better political theater this way anyways!

I guess the point is to ask questions that matter or shut up. If this question mattered why have an idiot like Vitter do it and if it didn't matter enough to use a credible person, why ask it?

I understand political theater, but when it only plays to your base right after an election why take the chance of looking pointlessly partisan to the majority of Americans. Surely they don't have a lack of confidence in the base, so then you're trying to expand your influence.

For Vitter to be questioning anybody's ethics is hypocritical at best.

True, Vitter is on shaky ground throwing around ethics allegations.

However, the Clintons present an unusual problem that the Senate has to at least address. I don't think for a minute that a former president and a sitting secretary of state could be bought, whatever their party. It was right for Lugar to raise thoughtful, responsible questions and then vote for confirmation.
